A Boy With a Book

Name: Julian London
Age/DOB: 16/ March 12th
Gender: Male
Sexuality: Bisexual

Binding Meets Cover

Appearance:Julian is short for his age, standing an entire 5'5", and wiry. His face is faintly square, slightly feminine, but no more or less handsome than the next fellow. His best feature could be said to be his lips, which are plump, pink, and very pleasant. His hair, a messy mop atop his head, is a honey brown color which goes nicely with his large, brown doe eyes.

Personality:Julian is awkward, clumsy, and very sweet. His shy and nervous nature conflict strongly with his desire to be friendly and make friends, which can sometimes cause him to say the wrong thing at the right time (which can, and sometimes does, cause him to fall back to stuttering if he gets flustered enough). But he means well.

During his years of speech therapy, it was suggested to him to take up singing since a person cannot stutter when doing so. Happily, he took up accoustic guitar and the banjo. He is not exceptionally skilled in either but can play simple things-and does, from time to time, write a song or two. He enjoys both, as they offered relief from the stutter that drove him to his antisocial state, and often turns to them for comfort when upset. He is not an exceptional singer but his husky, warm, tenor voice is certainly not unpleasant to hear. But Julian isn't likely to ever bring it up.

He's a bit of a dreamer and wants to 'grow up' to be a successful novelist. Literature, he feels, is a safe course of study since his math and science skills are less than average but what he lacks in mathematical reasoning, he makes up for in creativity. His writing skills are exceptional (and, despite his aspirations, hidden from everyone except his brother Donny).

Prologue
Julian was born to an average, middle class family who lived in an average, middle class neighborhood in pleasant Kenwood, CA. His mother, a cheerful, summery woman, was one of two second grade teachers at the local grade school. His father, a once wild teenager turned attentive, doting dad, was a pilot for a nearby Santa Rosa airport. And his older brother, Donny, completed the small family with his devotion to being a good example for his shy, stutter stricken brother.

His early years were no different from the early years of most kids with the exception of speech therapy to correct the speech inpediment that was driving Julian into anti-socialness. He scraped his knees, ate some bugs, started school, fought with his brother occaisionally, and insisted his shoes have the face of one of the Ninja Turtles on them. He spent a lot of time building model planes with his dad in the basement of their home in the evenings and his days shadowing Donny who was the brother of all brothers. He taught Julian all the really important stuff-The fun of mud, the musical quality of sticks, the secrets to unnoticable christmas present peeking, the speed of 'no training-wheels', the usefulness of bush peeing, and, in later years, the art of asking out a girl (though, this would never be used. Julian's stutter and nervous nature kept him far away from this task.).

The sudden, catastrophic change in Julian's life that would lead to his eventual departure to Falcon Pride came in the December before his tenth birthday. Snow had been hitting the town, and surrounding areas, hard since late November with increasing intensity. A week before christmas, during a flight through a particularly nasty storm, his father's plane was misdirected and, after a horrific radio transmission, lost over the vast Pacific Ocean. The coast gaurd lead a search on the suspected crash area but it was abandoned after 4 days with no sign of bodies or wreckage.

The London family held the funeral in the same small, baptist church Mom and Dad London had been married in. The two brothers stood on either side of their once vibrant, summery mother who, or so it seemed to Julian, had aged drastically since the start of the search. The mourners-friends, family, and much much more-blanketed the ceremony in quiet, heartfelt sobs, passing words of comfort to the widowed mother and giving each of the boys a wordless hug. The speaker, Julian's uncle, doted on the lost pilot and urged all present to extend their prayers and hearts to his widow and sons. 9 year old Julian, pale and solemn, sang a hymn-it would be the only time he sang in public or ever got infront of a crowd.

Years later, his mother remarried a successful pharmacist and one time highschool football hero,Milo Sohlar, and, shortly thereafter, the youngest sibling, Lilly, was born. The harmony of his childhood was shattered with the introduction of Milo. Donny and Milo clicked in a way Donny and their father hadn't. While Donny wasn't a football kind of kid, he did enjoy baseball and the two shared a common love of card games. Julian tried, for the sake of his mother and brother, to make some sort of bond with the man with little success. The two were starkly different-Julian was anti-social and a bookworm while Milo had been a highschool socialite. It was this that would, coupled with Julian's seemingly complete and total disinterest in friends-let alone girlfriends-spark tension that would eventually lead to an all out brawl.

At first, the discomfort that seemed to settle in the air whenever the two were in the same room was easy to ignore. The two talked a little but, as months passed and Milo drank more often, they talked less and the discomfort turned to tension and then to a quiet, smoldering kind of hate. Sober Milo avoided Julian but Drunk Milo began more and more often to seek Julian out. In the beginning, these tense, curt meetings were only uncomfortable-usually Milo asking about school, about girls, about his guitar-but they graduated to arguments about Julian's lack of or, perhaps, unnatural sexuality. Of course, by this time, Julian had confessed to his brother that he was a little confused about his sexuality, about whether he liked girls or boys or both, and Donny had accepted it without question as Julian knew he would. Donny had, in his passing, wise way, told Julian not to worry about it, he'd figure it out eventually. It was Donny that held Julian in check, kept him from taking Milo's drunken inquiries to heart, even played referee between the two if something particularly spikey had been said. But Donny left for law school in the fall after Julian turned 15. With Donny nowhere in sight to offer a shoulder and Milo's badgering and increasingly threatening manner (the man was starkly homophobic) and Julian's lack of an answer for anything definitive, arguments turned to fights. Those fights quickly escalated and one night, when all the right conditions were in the right place at the right time-Milo too drunk to watch his tongue and Julian too angry to brush him off-the two exchanged words and then fists in the livingroom of the family's small home.

Julian, much smaller, younger, and weaker than his step father was overpowered and, when all was said and done, Julian spent the night in a hospital and Milo spent the night sobering in jail.

Donny flew in from college and, with his big-brother-soon-to-be-lawyer wisdom and his fathers sense of family values, suggested a solution that would head off the worst of the issues with one stone. Milo in rehab. Julian in a new place-a Pride Academy. His mother, sleepy with her soccer mom valium escape, agreed. And, within a matter of days, after a serious talk between the two brothers, Donny secured Julian a plane ticket.
